Idyllwild Mountain Fire Burns 14,000 Acres of Land

No end is in sight for the wildfire that has destroyed seven residences, and blackened more than 14 square miles of trees and brush in the San Jacinto Mountains, fire officials said Tuesday, July 16.
The 9,000-acre Mountain Fire, which started Monday afternoon near Mountain Center and burned eastward, is 10 percent contained. Steep and inaccessible terrain is hampering the more than 2,200 firefighters who are battling the fire, and billowing smoke is hindering air tanker pilots.
Several more evacuations were ordered Tuesday, including the Fleming Ranch area and 24 homes on the Coachella Valley side of the mountains, the U.S. Forest Service said. Also evacuated was Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times in the Idyllwild area.
Wednesday's weather will not bring any help to firefighters: a forecast high of 106 degrees in Mountain Center, with west winds at 5-10 mph and gusts up to 20 mph. Showers and thunderstorms are possible starting Friday.
The property damage was tallied after a Riverside County Office of Emergency Services damage assessment team surveyed the burned area.
“Honestly, we thought that the structure destruction was greater than it is,” U.S. Forest Service spokesman John Miller said. But property owners had done a good job clearing vegetation, and firefighters made some “good saves” on structures, he said.
At Bonita Vista, an area of scattered ranches near Apple Canyon Road where 20 homes were evacuated Monday, three mobile homes and three other residences were destroyed and one home was damaged.
One cabin, a shed, a workshop and a garage were destroyed at the Pine Springs Ranch, a Seventh-day Adventist camp that had to evacuate about 180 visitors, mostly children, with only an hour's notice Monday.
And 11 outbuildings at various locations were destroyed. The Forest Service lost one outbuilding when flames burned through its helicopter base at Keenwild off Highway 243 near where the fire started, but the base remains in operation.
Miller said he hoped to have an address list of the damaged property on Wednesday.
