Online shoppers hoping to score a new Kindle were out of luck on Monday, with Amazon experiencing an outage that took down the entire e-commerce website.

The site was down for at least a half hour; as of 12:32 p.m., it appeared to be coming back online. Prior to that, visitors to Amazon.com were met with errors or a standard message from Amazon that read: "We're very sorry, but we're having trouble doing what you just asked us to do."

Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) dashboard, the company reported trouble with its AWS Management Console and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud in Northern Virginia.

As of 12:14 p.m. Pacific, "we are currently experiencing elevated error rates for the AWS Management Console," Amazon said. With Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, Amazon said it was "investigating increased API error rates and latencies for tagging related API calls in the US-EAST-1 region," as of 12:11 p.m. Pacific. Both issues have been resolved.

According to a December infographic from e-commerce experts 500 Friends, Amazon's projected 2012 revenue was $9,823 every five seconds, or $117,882 per minute.

The downtime comes after Google experienced a four-minute outage on Friday night. While that might not sound like a huge deal, it resulted in a 40 percent drop in global Internet traffic, according to Internet analytics firm GoSquared. That, according to Sky News, could have cost Google as much as $500,000.
