Officers responded to a 911 call about a three-vehicle crash just after 9.50pm Thursday, only to discover a burned out, mangled SUV, where they observed two bodies, according to NWI Times.

When the twisted remnants of the vehicle were towed away to a nearby town and work crews began taking the Jeep apart, they discovered five more victims inside.

According to Trooper Ricky Rayner, who completed the preliminary investigation of the deadly incident, 33-year-old Steven Crockett was driving a 2012 Freightliner semi-tractor pulling a box trailer with water northbound on I-65. A 2005 Jeep Cherokee was driving behind it.

The truck and Jeep were forced to stop due to a traffic jam near a work zone. That is when police say a northbound 2007 Volvo semi-tractor, operated by Howard Stratton, 55, smashed into the back of the Jeep, pushing in into the box trailer attached to the Freightliner.

The impact of the collision sparked a fire, which engulfed the Jeep and partially burned the two trucks involved in the crash.

‘The first responding officer indicated the flames were at least 30 feet into the air, so the Jeep was fully engulfed,’ Sgt. Tony Slocum told NBC Chicago.

Initially, responding officers were able to distinguish two bodies inside the torched Jeep. The vehicle was taken to the Keener Township Fire Department, where early Friday morning emergency workers discovered five more bodies.

Two of the victims, Yvette and Lindsey Williams, were sisters, Chicago Tribune reported, and Amando Mangual was also a family member. The three girls and boy found dead in the SUV were also related.

According to state police, Yvette Williams was behind the wheel of the Jeep at the time of the crash.

Stratton, who was delivering food for a Michigan company, was taken to Franciscan St Anthony Health-Crown Point after complaining of pain. Crockett escaped unharmed.

State police said neither drugs nor alcohol were believed to have played a role in the collision.

When the investigation is completed, information will be forwarded to the Jasper County prosecutor's office for review.
