Katy Perry's New Single 'Roars' Sounds Very Similar to Sara Bareilles's 'Brave'

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Sara Bareilles should be feeling pretty flattered by Katy Perry right about now. "Roar," the lead single from Perry's forthcoming album, leaked online over the weekend and is now being played by radio stations across the country. It's an uplifting, grrl-power tune that encourages ladies to stand up, be heard and roar. While it's a catchy foot-stomper that will likely be a huge hit, there's no denying that it bears more than a passing resemblance to Bareilles' tune "Brave."
Shortly after "Roar" leaked, Twitter blew up with comments about how similar the two tunes are, and a mash-up of the songs quickly followed. Although the songs' lyrics are quite different, they're both incredibly uplifting, power-to-the-people tunes with a similar marching-band style percussion and instrumentation.
While "Brave" was co-written by Bareilles and fun.'s Jack Antonoff, and was inspired by a friend who was struggling with coming out of the closet, "Roar" encourages ladies to stand up and be their own champions.
There's no telling whether Perry intentionally copied Bareilles' "Brave" style, but she has definitely heard the tune and likes it, as she tweeted "I heart you @Sarabareilles" with a link to her "Brave" video on May 15.
"Roar" is the first single off of Perry's upcoming album, Prism, which drops in October. Do you think Perry copied Barielles? Let us know your thoughts below.
